The X20CP1684 is a controller module produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. Within a distributed control cabinet, this unit serves as the processing hub that coordinates connected I/O slices and exchanges deterministic data with higher-level networks used in industrial automation. It handles local logic, communication tasks, and process data exchange at the station level, which helps keep field signals close to the control point. Because the controller sits directly on the X20 station, it can supervise nearby modules without requiring a separate standalone CPU rack. The module also includes one interface slot for local expansion cards, allowing additional functions to be added without extra field wiring.
An Intel-compatible Atom processor running at 0.4 GHz executes the application code and manages cyclical control tasks. Working storage is provided by 512 MB of DDR4 RAM for real-time variables, while fast cycle buffers reside in an additional 1 MB of SRAM. This separation lets the controller keep frequently updated process data in fast memory while retaining a larger workspace for the application. Program images are stored in 1 GB of onboard flash, and network data is transferred through a TSN 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet interface for deterministic communication on standard cabling. For point-to-point diagnostics or legacy devices, a single RS232 serial channel is available, and the integrated power supply module provides the backplane voltages required by the connected slices.
Additional connectivity is supplied by two USB host receptacles for service dongles, removable media, or human-machine interface peripherals. Removable application memory is accepted on a CompactFlash card, so projects and backup data can be transferred without external programming equipment. A single Powerlink port supports deterministic synchronization with networked drives or remote I/O stations. USB-connected storage or service devices can be attached locally, while the removable card remains separate from the fixed onboard flash. The memory card can also be handled independently of the front USB connections, which separates project transfer from temporary service access.
