The X20CP0410-S is a compact CPU module supplied by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input/Output Modules series. It serves as the control centerpiece inside distributed I/O stations, executing machine logic and coordinating network communication between sensors, actuators, and higher-level systems. By combining processing, memory, and standard field interfaces in a plug-in format, the unit streamlines installation inside electrical cabinets and reduces wiring complexity in industrial automation cells.
In operation, the module relies on an ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 166 MHz, supported by dual-level cache of 32 kB L1 instruction and data plus 512 kB L2 for deterministic execution. Program code and data reside in a soldered 256 MB eMMC Flash device that withstands 20,000 erase and write cycles, while runtime variables are buffered in 8 kB of FRAM to keep values after power-down. Volatile workspace is provided by 128 MB DDR3 SDRAM. The core can complete one instruction every 0.0446 µs, enabling fast event-driven response. For plant networking, the front panel carries a shielded RJ45 connector that supports Auto-MDI/MDIX negotiation at 10/100 Mbit/s, allowing direct linkage to controllers, switches, or diagnostic laptops without additional adapters.
System energy demand remains low at 2.2 W, which simplifies cabinet thermal design and permits dense stacking of neighboring I/O slices. Firmware tasks can be scheduled with a shortest cycle of 4 ms, so deterministic control loops or protocol handling fit within the device’s timing envelope. Two USB 1.1/2.0 Type A ports provide service access and peripheral expansion, each limited to 0.2 A output current to protect the backplane supply. Across its service life, the flash subsystem can accept up to 40 TB of cumulative written data, aligning with predictive maintenance logging and recipe storage requirements.
