The X20CM1201 is a counter and encoder interface module produced by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Installed on an X20 terminal block, it adds position-related feedback and fast digital counting to distributed control systems that rely on a common 24 V backplane. In industrial automation, it is used to register edge-triggered events from sensors or incremental encoders so that a PLC can execute synchronous motion or precise length measurements without adding a separate motion card. Because counting is handled locally at the module, the controller can read processed events over the bus instead of polling raw signal changes in software.
The module is powered from the system bus at 24 VDC and offers 4 configurable I/O channels that can be assigned as counter, latch, or comparator inputs. Each channel feeds a 32-bit counter, giving more than four billion distinct counts before rollover, which suits long linear axes or high-speed rotary tools. Quadrature decoding is supported with 4x evaluation, so one encoder line delivers position updates at every rising and falling edge of both phases. A hardware input filter trimmed to no more than 2 µs suppresses contact bounce and short-duration noise without compromising reaction time. Latch and comparator functions also help the module respond predictably during registration, cutoff, and indexing tasks.
For rapid motion tasks, the inputs accept frequencies up to 100 kHz, while galvanic separation of 500 Veff keeps field wiring transients away from the internal bus. Push/pull outputs can source or sink a combined 0.4 A, with a per-channel nominal limit of 0.1 A for gate signals or status lamps. Despite these capabilities, the unit loads the backplane with only 0.01 W of bus power and 1.5 W of internal I/O power, which helps limit added heat when several modules are installed side by side. The encoder supply terminal can deliver up to 600 mA at 24 V to power external sensors. This arrangement is useful where fast sensor pulses and actuator feedback must be captured without placing extra processing load on the central CPU.
