The B & R Automation X20CM0985-1 is part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It features 8 voltage inputs rated at ±480 V or 120 V with 16-bit resolution and 3 current inputs of 5 A or 1 A AC, also with 16-bit resolution. The module supports 5 digital outputs at 24 VDC, a relay output of 1 A, and can operate in ambient temperatures from -25 to 60°C horizontally and up to 2000 meters elevation.
Internal Product Review
The X20CM0985-1 is a B & R Automation fieldbus input/output module well suited for precise electrical measurement in distributed automation systems. Three 5 A / 1 A AC current inputs and eight ±480 V / 120 V voltage inputs provide excellent coverage for detailed power acquisition. The 16-bit current resolution and 16-bit voltage resolution make this module especially appealing for high-quality signal processing.

Product Description:
The X20CM0985-1 is a multifunction measurement module produced by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus I/O Modules series. The unit attaches to an X20 slice base and serves as an interface between power circuits and the controller, capturing instantaneous line voltages and feeder currents while also providing auxiliary outputs. In industrial automation, it supplies high-resolution electrical feedback so that drives, energy meters, and protection algorithms running in the PLC can react to load changes or fault conditions with millisecond accuracy. By combining analog measurement and digital switching in one enclosure, it helps reduce cabinet space and field wiring.
It tolerates ambient temperatures from -25 to 60 °C when mounted horizontally and from -25 to 50 °C when mounted vertically, allowing installation near heat-generating equipment. The analog front end accepts 8 × ±480 V / 120 V voltage inputs with a 1 MΩ input impedance for phasor measurements, and each channel uses 16-bit resolution that provides 65,536 discrete steps. Three current channels rated at 3 × 5 A / 1 A AC connect directly to standard current transformers, and they use a separate 16-bit converter for matching precision. Internal delta-sigma sampling aligns the voltage and current streams so that the CPU can calculate true power, displacement factor, and harmonics without external transducers.
For control tasks, the module also provides 5 × 24 VDC, 0.5 A sourcing outputs that can energize contactors or status lamps, plus a relay stage rated at 1 × 1 A for galvanically isolated signaling. Continuous operation is permitted from 0 to 2000 m elevation without derating. The module uses spring-clamp connectors and backplane power distribution in the X20 system, and separate diagnostic registers report open-circuit sensors, output short circuits, and over-temperature events to the host CPU.
