The X20BT9400 is a bus transmitter module produced by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It provides the interface between a local X20 rack and a remote slice of I/O nodes, carrying communication signals and supply lines across the X2X cable. Within an industrial control system, the unit expands the address space so that distributed sensors and actuators operate as a single homogeneous fieldbus segment.
Electrical loading on the rack remains light because bus-side consumption is limited to 0.5 W, while an onboard supply can forward up to 240 W of internal I/O power to connected modules. The design supports a cumulative field current of 10 A, letting multiple high-draw channels share one feeder without tripping protection. All wiring stays finger-safe behind the enclosure, which carries an IP20 protection rating, so the device is suitable for mounting in standard control cabinets. Communication and power are exported over the remote backplane through the X2X Link; the transmitter itself needs only 0.6 W from that link, leaving most of the capacity available for downstream electronics. An integrated header can energize X67 modules directly, eliminating the need for a standalone injector in mixed X20 and X67 architectures.
The electrical characteristics remain stable at altitudes up to 2000 m, where lower air density begins to reduce cooling efficiency. During transport or machine operation, the housing withstands shocks of up to 15 g and continuous vibration levels of 1 g, helping prevent intermittent contact at the spring-clamp terminals. The module is rated for overvoltage category II, so its insulation clearances are suitable for distribution circuits located downstream from the main service entrance. These clearances help protect the internal circuitry against the transient voltages typically encountered at this point in an electrical distribution system.
