B & R Automation manufactures the X20BC8083, a communication module within the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. The device serves as the fieldbus gateway for an I/O node, distributing power and real-time data between the higher-level PLC and the attached slice modules on the local rack. By combining communication control and basic power distribution, it simplifies cabinet wiring and supports modular machine architectures in industrial automation cells where I/O is placed close to sensors and actuators.
Network connectivity is provided through a 2 x RJ45 Ethernet interface that accepts CAT 5 SF/UTP cabling, and this medium shields the differential pairs to maintain signal integrity on electrically noisy factory floors. The controller communicates over POWERLINK, so deterministic time-slot-based traffic reaches downstream I/O without software polling delays. Internal electronics draw from a 24 VDC system supply, allowing the device to share the common control voltage used in most cabinets. An IP20 protection rating provides finger-safe terminals and limits installation to enclosed spaces free of dripping liquids.
