The X20BC0143-10 module works with POWERLINK bus systems; gets its power from a 24 VDC source, and normally needs 2.5 watts of power. This is one of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules made by B & R Automation. It is supposed to be placed on a DIN rail and operates at 100 Mbit/s Ethernet speed. Before the hardware is physically put in or taken out, there must be no voltage on any of the connectors on the I/O plate. If there is still current in the pins, it might flash into an arc, break circuit traces, or, worse, shock an unsuspecting operator. The operating software for the controller must clearly allow that sort of module to be hot-swapped.
