The X20BC0087-C01 communication module is produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It serves as an Ethernet-based interface that links distributed I/O slices to higher-level controllers in machine and plant automation systems. By translating real-time data between the internal X2X backplane and external networks, the unit enables deterministic exchange of process signals without requiring an additional gateway. Its compact housing mounts alongside power and signal slices on a standard DIN rail, which helps conserve cabinet space in modular installations.
Two network lines are provided through two shielded RJ45 connectors, giving daisy-chain capability and reducing panel wiring when multiple stations are arranged in sequence. Each port supports a 10/100 Mbit/s data rate over Ethernet, and the module automatically switches between half-duplex and full-duplex operation while also supporting auto-MDI/MDIX and autonegotiation to simplify setup. Electrical signaling follows 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX standards, so standard Category 5e cabling can be used for runs up to 100 m per segment. Bus and I/O isolation separates the internal logic from the field side to help prevent ground loops when several stations share the same network. During operation, the electronics draw only 2 W, which keeps thermal load low and supports dense stacking without forced-air cooling.
As a Modbus TCP/UDP Slave fieldbus node, the module replies to queries from a PLC in cyclic or acyclic modes and can obtain addressing automatically through DHCP or BOOTP services. The minimum fieldbus cycle is 1 ms, while the proprietary X2X backplane refreshes local I/O slices in as little as 500 μs, keeping internal latency below one millisecond end-to-end. The enclosure has an IP20 protection rating, making it suitable for installation inside a control cabinet that provides the required shielding. Support for link status monitoring allows diagnostic data to be forwarded to higher-level supervisory software without interrupting user traffic.
