The X20BC0073 is a DIN-rail-mounted bus controller developed by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. In an automation rack it occupies the first slot and acts as the network gateway that connects all downstream I/O slices to the plant controller. By executing protocol handling and power distribution for the backplane, the module simplifies decentralized wiring and allows deterministic exchange of process data between sensors, actuators, and the supervisory PLC.
Its configuration state is Non-Configurable, meaning fixed firmware parameters govern startup and no user code can overwrite them. The default functional profile is identified as 254 - Bus Controller, which reserves the CAN object dictionary for gateway services rather than local logic execution. Communication to the field layer is handled through a single 1 CAN I/O Interface that supports classic CANopen addressing for deterministic telegrams. Physically, the housing depth of 75 mm allows installation in shallow cabinets, and the enclosure snaps onto a Top-Hat Rail for quick replacement. An embedded parameter chip stores serial number and calibration flags, while push-in terminal technology permits tool-less wiring.
The module accepts three removable terminal blocks, so the backplane divides the I/O slice into 3 submodules. Each block follows a 2 × 6 layout that groups signals by function and enforces polarity through a keyed profile rated at 24 VDC. In height the controller measures 99 mm, and its front width of 37.5 mm ensures that adjacent X20 slices align without overhang. Double-end sleeves are not supported, so conductors must be terminated directly in the spring cage. Because the push-in contacts clamp the wire sheath, vibration resistance is maintained without additional ferrules.
