The X20BC0053 is a bus coupler produced by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It serves as a DeviceNet slave that links distributed X20 I/O slices to a higher-level controller across the network. By translating local X2X backplane data into DeviceNet telegrams, the unit allows sensors and actuators on the modular X20 platform to be addressed from a PLC without additional gateways, which helps reduce panel complexity in industrial automation projects. This arrangement also lets modular field devices remain close to the machine process while central control stays on the network level.
The module draws only 1.5 W from the internal X2X supply, so multiple couplers can share a low-current power rail. Its fieldbus interface is a DeviceNet adapter, meaning it answers to master requests and does not initiate traffic. Cabling is performed through a 5-pin male multipoint plug that carries power, CAN signals, and shield. When the network starts, the unit identifies the baud rate automatically and then passes data at up to 500 kbit/s, provided the physical medium supports that speed. If the medium length is extended, the bus can still reach nodes as far as 500 m at lower rates. An integrated terminating resistor can be enabled through a slide switch, and galvanic separation between DeviceNet and the local I/O backplane protects the slice electronics from field disturbances. This separation helps limit the transfer of unwanted electrical noise between the fieldbus side and the connected I/O assembly.
The housing carries an IP20 rating, so it must be mounted inside a protected enclosure but is safe to handle during wiring. Slice width is fixed at 37.5 +0.2 mm, allowing deterministic spacing for ventilation and wiring ducts. The coupler exchanges process data with adjacent modules on the backplane every 400 µs, supporting fast control loops even though global bus synchronization is disabled. Horizontal or vertical orientation is permitted, with thermal derating of 0.5°C per 100 m above 2000 m elevation to preserve component life. Flexible mounting orientation can be useful where cabinet depth, cable routing, or module stacking direction is limited by the machine layout.
