The X20BB81 module is produced by B&R Automation as part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Designed for distributed automation systems, this unit serves as an I/O carrier that supports attached electronics and terminal connections for field wiring. It provides the physical mounting point for companion modules and keeps the station layout orderly inside compact control cabinets. Because it functions as a carrier rather than a direct signal-processing slice, its main role is to support modular expansion and stable installation. This arrangement is useful in machine sections where compact, rail-mounted I/O must be expanded in small increments.
This carrier includes 1 add-on slot, so a single module can be mounted on the right side of the housing. Compatible add-on categories are IF, HB, which allows either an interface card or a hot-plug backplane module to occupy that position. When installed, the enclosure extends 75 mm from the mounting rail and spans 62.5 mm across the front, which helps with clearance planning in tightly packed panels. The narrow profile leaves room for adjacent modules and wire routing paths. During operation, the backplane draws only 0.50 W from the system bus, which keeps the added electrical load and heat contribution low.
An overall height of 99 mm lets the module line up with other X20 components on a shared DIN rail. For electrical continuity, it must be mounted on base modules marked BC, HB, because those bases complete the internal bus connection and support the installed slice. The keyed supply terminals are intended for 24 VDC control voltage, which helps prevent mismatched wiring during installation. The signal connector uses 12 pins arranged for standard harness connections, keeping field termination organized at the module face. This connection layout supports orderly cable entry without changing the function of the carrier.
