The X20BB32 communications backplane module is built by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It links individual X20 I/O slices to the system bus and carries supply and signaling lines across the rail. In an industrial control panel, the module serves as the mechanical and electrical backbone that allows quick expansion of distributed I/O nodes without individual cabling. Because the backplane passes bus communication and supply paths through each adjoining slice, individual modules can be added or replaced without separate interconnect wiring between neighboring units. This arrangement also keeps the node compact and reduces the number of external termination points inside the enclosure.
Its bus power draw is just 0.35 W, which helps limit cabinet heat while sizing the 24 V control supply. The module accepts a nominal logic voltage of 24 VDC, matching standard control circuits. Each integrated spring contact tolerates up to 10 A, so common sensor and actuator currents pass through without overstressing the copper conductors. A mechanical pitch of 62.5 mm (+0.2) sets the spacing between adjacent carriers and keeps alignment consistent with other X20 components. The housing meets the IP20 ingress rating, which means solid objects larger than 12.5 mm are excluded while the device remains unsealed against liquids. This level of protection suits installation inside closed electrical cabinets where accidental finger contact must be limited, but it is not intended for direct exposure to washdown or dripping fluids.
For elevated sites, the operating temperature must be reduced by 0.5 °C/100 m, so high-altitude installations need additional thermal margin. The backplane routes one RS-232 link and therefore provides 1 serial connection for diagnostics and service access. Installation flexibility is improved because the carrier can be fixed in a horizontal rail layout behind a flat panel. It can also be mounted in a vertical stack inside narrow cabinets without affecting signal integrity.
