The X20AT4222 temperature input module is produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Mounted on the system backplane, this part conditions resistance signals from Pt100 or Pt1000 sensors and forwards converted data to the PLC over the fieldbus. Its role in industrial automation is to give the controller accurate, electrically isolated temperature feedback from dispersed machine zones while reducing wiring effort through the series plug-in form factor. The module occupies one slot and relies on the carrier for power and diagnostics.
Signal processing is based on a Sigma-delta converter that delivers a native 16-bit digital word for every measurement. With only one channel enabled, the conversion cycle is completed in 20 ms; enabling two to four inputs sets the sampling rate to 40 ms/ch. User-selectable digital filters from 1 to 66.7 ms act in addition to the 500 Hz analog input filter, allowing noise suppression to match process dynamics. A common-mode tolerance above 0.7 V and an isolation barrier rated at 500 V eff separate sensor circuitry from the system bus, which helps limit ground loops and protect downstream electronics. During measurement, the module sources 250 µA ±1.25% through the RTD element, a value low enough to minimize self-heating while still maintaining a stable signal.
The card provides 4 input channels that accept either 2-wire or 3-wire connections across a resistance span of 0.1 to 4500 Ω, or 0.05 to 2250 Ω in low-range mode. Input circuitry tolerates excursions up to ±30 V without damage, and valid measurement is maintained for sensor temperatures from −200 to 850 °C. Within that range, the delivered data has a granularity of 0.1 °C, giving the controller the resolution needed for precise thermal regulation. User-selectable filter periods allow bandwidth matching so the module can be tuned to either fast or heavily averaged temperature profiles.
