The X20AT2402 is a fieldbus thermocouple input module produced by B&R Automation as part of the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. This plug-in component occupies a single X20 slot and provides two isolated thermocouple channels for direct temperature acquisition on distributed machine nodes. By converting millivolt signals from standard thermocouples into digital values that the controller can read over the system bus, the module enables precise thermal monitoring inside ovens, dryers, and process lines without extra signal conditioners.
Its electrical load on the rack remains minimal; the backplane supplies only 0.01 W for logic while the sensor side draws 0.72 W from the internal I/O supply, lowering cabinet heat rise. Horizontally mounted modules tolerate ambient ranges from -25 to 60 °C, whereas a vertical orientation is limited to -25 to 50 °C because of convection constraints. Environmental sealing corresponds to IP20, so the unit requires enclosure mounting but allows tool-free wiring. Mechanical durability is suitable for transport and installation: a shock limit of 15 g helps prevent data loss during impacts, and vibration resistance of 1 g guards against continuous machine oscillation. The circuitry falls under overvoltage category II, indicating mains-isolated power distribution.
Application focus must also consider the measurement side. The module presents 0.1 °C resolution across the input channels, enabling tight thermal loops when paired with PID tasks in the controller. It accepts standard type J, K, N, S, B, or R thermocouples without extra scaling, which simplifies direct connection to common temperature sensors used in process equipment. Overall thermal loss is limited to 0.86 W, contributing marginally to cabinet dissipation budgets. Operation remains consistent from sea level to 2000 m elevation, and altitude should be considered when the module is installed near heat-producing devices.
