The X20AO4635 analog output module from B&R Automation belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It provides four analog channels for a remote I/O node, letting a PLC drive proportional valves, speed references, and other actuators in industrial automation. Digital setpoints from the backplane are converted into isolated current or voltage levels. This arrangement allows the module to send analog commands directly to field devices without requiring a separate signal converter at the point of use.
The converter operates with 16-bit resolution, giving 65,536 discrete steps, and each increment equals 305.176 µV in voltage mode and 610.352 nA in current mode. This fine resolution supports small output changes when a process needs smooth analog adjustment rather than coarse step changes. A conversion cycle finishes in 50 µs, and a 10 kHz analog filter removes switching noise before the signal reaches the terminal. Amplitude accuracy is maintained by a gain error limited to ±0.04 % and a nonlinearity of less than 0.005 %. Bus power draw is 0.01 W, the internal I/O circuit uses 1.5 W, and each channel can drive loads down to 1 kΩ in voltage mode or 500 Ω in current mode. A short-circuit detection circuit monitors each output and engages protection if current rises beyond the allowable range.
After a new command arrives, the channel settles within one LSB in 500 µs, giving deterministic response for high-speed regulation loops. Zero shift is held to ±0.022 %, which helps limit drift during long operating cycles. An isolation barrier rated at 500 Veff separates field wiring from internal logic and helps prevent ground-loop interference across the backplane. The output stage tolerates faults up to ±40 mA, protecting the device during accidental shorts. Because the analog core is isolated, multiple modules can operate on the same backplane with less risk of one field circuit disturbing a neighboring output.
