The X20-BM is a bus module produced by B & R Automation for its X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Within an automation node, it forms the physical backbone that links the fieldbus coupler to the individual I/O slices and routes operating power across the station. The unit’s purpose is to establish both data continuity and the primary 24 V supply rail so that digital and analog modules can be added or removed without rewiring. Its housing profile matches other X20 components, allowing direct engagement through the integrated backplane connectors.
The module draws only 0.45 W from the internal bus, so control cabinet heat rise is minimal. All connected electronics share a nominal signal level of 24 VDC, while high-energy loads can be switched through contacts rated up to 10 A. Device ingress protection is classified as IP20, indicating finger-safe terminals for installation in enclosed panels. A slim pitch of 12.5 mm lets many modules line up on a DIN rail without exceeding the allowed rack length. Horizontal or vertical mounting is supported, and the left-side I/O interruption feature enables hot swapping of segments when maintenance is required. Because no mechanical keying is provided, the installer must observe position coding, yet potential group support is present so galvanically separated voltage groups can be created inside one node.
The module has a depth of 75 mm and a height of 99 mm, dimensions that clear most cabinet door clearances while still permitting front-side wiring. Internal power is routed on the backplane as +24 VDC/GND, preventing external jumpering and reducing wiring errors. High-speed deterministic communication is possible because the carrier board supports the extended X2X+ protocol, ensuring low-jitter synchronization with motion controllers and safety CPUs. This arrangement supports communication and power transfer between the fieldbus interface and the signal-processing layers of an X20 I/O stack.
