B&R Automation manufactures the CP4010 for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. The compact unit functions as the primary controller in a slice-based I/O station, combining application execution, network routing, and diagnostics. By placing processing power next to the sensor and actuator wiring, the module reduces bus latency and removes the need for a separate PLC enclosure in many automation cells.
Its computational core is an ARM Cortex-A9 running at 166 MHz, and each instruction completes in as little as 0.0446 µs, which supports high-speed logic sequences and motion loops. The controller carries 128 MB DDR3 SDRAM for runtime variable storage, buffered by a 512 kB L2 cache that shortens memory fetch times. Nonvolatile program space is provided by a 256 MB eMMC flash device, rated for 20,000 erase/write cycles and a write life of 40 TB. For communication, the integrated 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX port negotiates 10/100 Mbit/s, allowing deterministic exchange with SCADA systems and peer modules. The board draws only 2.2 W, so convection cooling inside the cabinet is usually sufficient. Two USB 1.1/2.0 Type A connectors permit HMI attachment or service data transfer.
Cycle timing and data retention underline the module’s suitability for real-time automation. The built-in scheduler can execute successive tasks every 4 ms, aligning tightly with drive feedback loops and digital I/O sampling. When the system powers down, 8 kB FRAM preserves counters or recipe numbers without adding write wear to the flash device. Peripheral power is available through the USB receptacles, limited to 0.2 A to protect upstream supplies while still driving memory sticks or service adapters. The enclosure carries an IP20 protection rating, so it is intended for use inside closed cabinets where accidental contact with live parts must be prevented.
