B&R Automation produced the VSS122R35.072P-000 for the VS Smart Sensors series. It belongs to the Smart Sensor product group and the integrated machine vision range, combining optics, processing, memory, and illumination in a compact S-mount housing. Within automated machinery, it performs one active vision function locally for tasks such as presence checking, code reading, or alignment. Because image preprocessing is handled onboard, network traffic stays low and machine cycle times remain predictable.

A quad-core processing section supports the sensor’s real-time operation. Its Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad core CPU runs at 800 MHz, and the platform includes 1 MB of L2 cache to keep data flowing to all four cores. The device has 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, allowing intermediate images and inspection results to be buffered without unnecessary slowdown. Image capture uses a CMOS array with an effective resolution of 5.3 MP, and the sensor can acquire new frames at up to 43 fps when exposure and lighting conditions permit. It is also suitable for line-sensor applications that monitor continuous web material. UV LEDs and a type 1 LED lens are not supported on this version.

The optical front end uses an S-mount and is supplied with a 25 mm F4 lens sized for a 2/3-inch image circle. Together with the sensor geometry, this lens produces a 23° field of view that suits moderate working distances, while a glass window with a polarizing filter helps reduce glare from metallic surfaces. Illumination is provided by 16 LEDs arranged in four independently switchable segments, and each multicolored emitter can produce R / B / IR / White light to match different surface characteristics. Beam shaping is handled by an LED lens type 3 with a narrow pattern that concentrates light on small targets, allowing lighting adjustments without mechanical changes.
