The VSS122R22.M53P-000 is a smart sensor produced by B & R Automation for the VS Smart Sensors series. As a compact unit in the integrated machine vision range, it combines image capture, preprocessing, and decision-making inside one housing, so a separate industrial PC is not required. It is intended for applications that need one active vision function, such as part presence verification or simple code reading, in real-time automation. That integrated approach keeps data transfer short and helps the unit respond quickly to pass or fail conditions on the line.

The sensor uses a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad core processor clocked at 800 MHz, and the CPU works with a 1 MB L2 cache to shorten memory fetch cycles during feature extraction. It includes 2 GB of DDR3L RAM, with 2 GB available for runtime buffers, to support the standard preprocessing performance variant. Image data come from a 1/1.8-inch CMOS imager with a native resolution of 1.3 MP, and in windowed mode the pipeline can reach up to 165 fps for high-speed inspections. The internal resources support local image handling without depending on a host computer for every inspection step. The unit can also be used in continuous-motion web applications, and one active vision function can be deployed at a time through the integrated machine vision tool set.

The optical path uses a macro lens with a focal length of 12 mm and an F4 aperture, providing a diagonal field of view of 37°. The lens is secured with an S-mount, and a glass diffuser is fitted in front of the optics to reduce glare on reflective surfaces. Illumination is supplied by 16 LEDs arranged in four multicolored segments, driven through LED lens type 2 to concentrate red, blue, infrared, or white light on the target. This arrangement supports contrast control across different surface finishes and printed materials. Segmented lighting also helps the sensor highlight edges, marks, or code areas within the same compact housing.
