The VSS122R21.052P-000 belongs to the VS Smart Sensors series from B & R Automation. It is a compact smart sensor that combines optics, illumination, and processing in one enclosure, so a separate industrial PC is not required. Within integrated machine vision tasks, the device captures images, preprocesses them, and executes one active vision function directly on the line, making it suitable for presence checks, code reading, or simple measurement steps in automated equipment. This layout allows inspection tasks to run close to the process without a separate computing platform.
The internal Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad-core processor runs at 800 MHz, giving the sensor the computing speed needed for local image handling and decision logic. Its architecture uses 4 cores, allowing parallel execution of imaging algorithms and network communication without slowing acquisition. A dedicated level-2 cache of 1 MB reduces latency when the same vision data is accessed repeatedly during successive inspections. Volatile storage totals 2 GB, providing room for frame buffers, temporary results, and active job data before transfer to a controller. Image updates reach 90 fps, so fast-moving product streams can be inspected with short intervals between captures when exposure and illumination are set correctly.
The supplied S-mount lens has a focal length of 12 mm, giving moderate magnification while keeping the housing compact for short working distances. A diagonal field of view of 37° allows coverage of medium-sized parts without additional optics and helps the sensor observe a useful area at close range.
