B & R Automation's VSS122R21.051P-000 smart sensor belongs to the VS Smart Sensors series and sits in the Integrated machine vision product range. The unit merges optics, multicolored lighting, and an embedded processor inside a single S-mount housing, so it can carry out one active vision function directly on the production line. By pre-evaluating image data, the device reduces bandwidth demands on the central control network and delivers deterministic feedback for positioning, inspection, and identification tasks in industrial automation cells.

The internal processing platform is a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad core package clocked at 800 MHz and supported by a 1 MB L2 cache. Together with 2 GB of RAM, this architecture executes preprocessing at the standard variant performance level, allowing edge detection, code reading, or presence checks to finish within the sensor before fieldbus transfer. Imaging is performed by a global shutter array with a native resolution of 1.3 MP, and captured frames can be streamed or buffered at up to 90 fps so fast-moving parts remain sharp. The device is not intended for line-sensor applications, which means it is optimized for area capture rather than continuous web inspection.

Optics are arranged around a 37° field of view created by a 12 mm F4 lens installed in the specified S-mount. The lens works with a glass front window that carries an anti-reflective coating to minimize glare from machine lighting. Illumination is supplied by 16 LEDs grouped into four segments, with each segment containing multicolored diodes. These LEDs can emit R / B / IR / White light through a type 2 standard lens, allowing on-axis or grazing exposure without external lamps. The variant option, preprocessing performance, and product group are all listed as standard for general-purpose inspection stations.
