The VSS122Q24.M5BP-000 is a vision-capable smart sensor produced by B & R Automation within the VS Smart Sensors series. It combines imaging, illumination, and edge processing so that one active vision function can run directly on the sensor without a remote PC. This arrangement supports direct installation in tight industrial spaces where automated inspection, identification, or alignment tasks are required. As part of an integrated machine vision range, it is intended for applications that need local decision-making at the sensor level.

The imaging core provides 3.5 MP of resolution and streams data at up to 43 fps, giving enough temporal and spatial detail for medium-speed production lines. An internal clock of 800 MHz drives a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad core processor supported by 2 GB RAM and a 1 MB L2 cache, so filtering, thresholding, or pattern matching can be handled before results are forwarded to the controller. This local preprocessing reduces the amount of raw image data that has to be transferred upstream. The four cores share the processing workload, which helps maintain consistent response during inspection tasks. The sensor angle helps establish the working-distance envelope, and the S-mount supports lens changes. The device is not suitable for line-sensor applications, so rolling-shutter capture is used instead.

Illumination is provided by 16 LEDs arranged in four multicolored segments, and each segment can emit R / G / B / Lime light to improve contrast on varied targets. A plastic front window with an anti-reflective coating protects the optics, and LED lens type 2 helps distribute the light evenly across the inspection area. Multicolor illumination also supports surfaces that respond differently to different wavelengths. Optical capture is handled through a 12 mm, F4, 1/1.8″ macro lens coupled to the S-mount, producing a 37° field of view. The unit cannot be combined with IR emitters or a type 1 LED lens.
