The VSS122Q21.031P-000 smart sensor is produced by B & R Automation as a member of the VS Smart Sensors series. Designed for integrated machine vision tasks, this device combines imaging, preprocessing, and illumination in a single housing, so it can perform a vision task without an external controller. In industrial automation lines, it executes local inspection, identification, and positioning routines and then forwards processed data to PLCs over standard networks. This arrangement helps keep image evaluation close to the machine process and reduces the amount of raw image data that must be transferred elsewhere.

At the core of the unit is a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad-core processor running at 800 MHz. Its computation is spread across 4 cores, and a shared 1 MB L2 cache accelerates memory access. Image buffers and intermediate results reside in 2 GB of DDR RAM, enabling the standard preprocessing variant to keep pace with applications that need one active vision function. A capture rate of 90 fps lets the sensor inspect fast-moving parts while staying synchronized with conveyor motion. The device belongs to the smart sensor product group and does not support line-sensor operation, so it is intended for area imaging.

The optical front end uses a 1/1.8-inch lens assembly with a 6 mm focal length and F3.5 aperture that yields a field of view of 37° on the 1.3 MP imager. An S-mount holder allows rapid lens changes, and glass with an anti-reflective coating protects the sensor without introducing glare. Integrated illumination is delivered by 16 LEDs grouped in four segments, and each diode can emit R / G / B / Lime light so the scene can be conditioned without external lighting. LED lens type 2 spreads the beam evenly across the target, which helps the sensor maintain consistent image contrast across the inspection area. All preprocessing is handled inside the unit before results are sent to the machine controller, allowing the network to carry evaluation results instead of full image streams.
