The VSS122Q12.021P-000 is a compact smart vision sensor produced by B & R Automation and supplied within the VS Smart Sensors series. This model combines imaging, processing, and illumination in a single housing so it can execute one active vision function directly on the machine. In an automation cell, the unit captures images, evaluates them internally, and transmits discrete pass/fail or measurement data to the PLC, eliminating the need for a separate industrial PC.

Computation is handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad-core processor clocked at 800 MHz, and the four cores share 2 GB of DDR3 RAM so multiple algorithms such as edge detection or code reading can run without memory swapping. A dedicated 1 MB L2 cache reduces latency between the CPU and RAM, improving deterministic response times required on high-speed machines. The global shutter sensor delivers up to 165 fps, allowing inspection of rapidly moving parts on conveyors. At its native 1.3 MP resolution, the device balances field of view with data volume, keeping image transfers short while providing sufficient detail for moderate-size features.

Optical characteristics are matched to typical working distances. The integrated lens provides a focal length of 4.6 mm, yielding a horizontal field that spans 74° when used with the 1/1.8-inch imager, so a wide area can be covered from a short standoff. Illumination is built in; the ring contains 16 LEDs arranged in four multicolored segments that switch between red, green, blue, and lime light to enhance contrast on varied surfaces. A front window made of glass with anti-reflective coating minimizes stray reflections and maximizes transmission, protecting the optics from airborne contaminants at the same time. An S-mount interface allows alternative optics when specialized depth of field or magnification is needed.
