The VSS122Q11.021P-000 smart sensor is produced by B & R Automation for integrated machine vision tasks within the VS Smart Sensors series. It combines a camera, lighting, and processing hardware in one compact device, allowing inspection or guidance functions to be embedded directly at the machine level without an external industrial PC. In an automation cell, the unit executes one active vision function such as presence verification or code reading and feeds the evaluated result to the control system.

Its embedded computing platform is a Cortex A9 i.MX6 processor clocked at 800 MHz. This processor has 1 MB of L2 cache that shortens memory fetch cycles when image kernels run continuously. An integrated 2 GB of DDR3 RAM holds temporary frame buffers, lookup tables, and neural weights, and the large workspace helps the sensor sustain real-time throughput at the native 1.3 MP resolution. Captured images stream through the pipeline at up to 90 fps, allowing precise measurements on fast conveyors. This model uses standard preprocessing performance, so computation is balanced between the CPU and a dedicated ISP to keep latency predictable. It is optimized for area imaging rather than line-scan acquisition.

Its optics use an S-mount holder fitted with a 4.6 mm F3.5 lens that produces a diagonal field of view of 74°. Front glass with an anti-reflective coating helps reduce stray reflections from machine surfaces. Wide-beam LED lens type 1 directs the onboard illumination, and the array contains 16 LEDs arranged in four multicolored segments that can emit red, green, blue, or lime light so contrast can be tuned to the inspected material. The number of active CPU cores is 4, which supports synchronized exposure control with the lighting strobe scheduler.
