The VSS122F21.051P-000 belongs to the VS Smart Sensors series from B & R Automation. It is a smart vision sensor that combines optics, lighting, image capture, and onboard processing in one housing for integrated machine vision tasks on production lines. Within an automation cell, it acquires images, executes one active vision function, and forwards pass/fail or positional data directly to the controller, reducing external PC requirements. That arrangement lets the sensor handle common inspection tasks in a compact form factor mounted directly on the machine.
The device is driven by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad-core processor running at 800 MHz. Those 4 cores, together with a 1 MB L2 cache, provide deterministic handling of preprocessing pipelines. The device has 2 GB RAM for the operating system and vision algorithms, while temporary image buffers reside in fast DDR space. The 1.3-megapixel image sensor delivers a native resolution of 1.3 MP, which is adequate for gauging parts and reading codes on medium-sized fields of view. At a maximum acquisition rate of 90 fps, the sensor can analyze rapidly moving objects, and one active vision function helps keep cycle times predictable. These resources support real-time evaluation and direct binary or analog output to downstream logic without external computing hardware.
The sensor uses a fixed focal assembly with a 12 mm focal length, producing a horizontal field of view of 37° through an S-mount lens barrel rated at 12 mm F4 for 2/3-inch formats. Illumination is built in; a ring of 16 LEDs arranged in four individually switchable segments emits white light through LED lens type 2 optics. Segmented lighting can help emphasize edges or surface features from different directions during image capture. The white illumination spans the entire visible spectrum, which supports color-independent contrast on printed marks and metallic surfaces. A glass front window with an anti-reflective coating helps minimize stray reflections, and the unit is not intended for line-sensor applications. The sensor is arranged for repeatable part detection under factory ambient lighting.
