B&R Automation’s VS Smart Sensors series includes the VSS122814.02BP-000, a compact smart sensor for integrated machine vision in automated machinery. This product group combines optics, lighting, and onboard processing to capture, analyze, and forward inspection results without an external controller. It acts as a self-contained inspection node, reducing wiring and cabinet space in conveyor, pick-and-place, and packaging lines where rapid image acquisition and basic decision logic are required.

Its optical block delivers a diagonal field of view of 74° through a fixed 4.6 mm F3.5 lens that fits the S-mount thread. With a 1/1.8 in. sensor format, the camera records 3.5 MP images at up to 43 fps, matching applications that need both resolution and speed. Illumination is integrated through a ring of 16 LEDs arranged in four addressable segments that emit red light centered at 632 nm. A wide-beam LED lens type 1 spreads the light uniformly, and the plastic front window has an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare. The lighting assembly cannot be combined with IR sources or alternative type-1 LED lenses. Line-scan operation is not supported, so the unit is intended only for area imaging.

Image data are preprocessed by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad core processor that runs on 4 cores at 800 MHz. A shared 1 MB L2 cache supports deterministic access to the embedded 2 GB of RAM. This standard variant provides the intended preprocessing performance and executes one active vision function directly in the sensor head before results are published to the control network. Because only one function can be loaded at a time, tool changes are handled through the Integrated Machine Vision software interface. The device is the standard variant for installations that do not require custom preprocessing or infrared illumination.
