The VSS122004.042P-000 is a smart camera manufactured by B&R Automation and supplied in the VS Smart Sensors series, a product group aimed at integrated machine vision tasks. The unit combines optics, processing, memory, and I/O inside one enclosure so it can execute a single active vision function, such as presence checking or code reading, without an external PC. By delivering processed results directly to the controller, the sensor simplifies cabinet layouts and shortens control loops in automated assembly, packaging, and inspection cells.

Computation is handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad core processor clocked at 800 MHz. The device carries 1 MB of shared L2 cache and 2 GB of DDR3 RAM so image buffering and user algorithms can run in parallel. A total of 4 cores lets the standard preprocessing variant dedicate separate threads to acquisition, filter execution, and fieldbus communication, which helps maintain deterministic cycle times. Because this model ships without an LED lens and without LED lighting, thermal load is reduced and the enclosure remains compact. The design is not intended for line-sensor applications, and it does not support UV or type 1 LED lenses. The front glass is fitted with a polarizing filter.

On the optical side, a global-shutter imager provides 3.5 MP resolution and sustains streaming at 43 fps for full-frame inspection sequences. A factory-installed lens with a focal length of 8 mm and F4 aperture mounts through an S-mount, allowing quick interchange with other lenses that use the same mechanical standard. The absence of integrated illumination requires external strobes, while the polarizing front window improves contrast on reflective parts so the internal standard preprocessing variant can maintain stable edge detection and measurement accuracy.
