The VSS112R31.072P-000 is a vision smart sensor produced by B & R Automation within the VS Smart Sensors series. As a compact imaging unit, it combines optics, illumination, processing, and I/O to locate, inspect, or measure machine features directly on the production line. By removing the need for a separate controller or light source, the device performs single-function automated visual checks that feed deterministic pass/fail or position data to the control network. This integrated layout reduces external components and helps the sensor return inspection results directly to the automation system.

The optical front end is tuned for medium working distances and uses a 23° field of view created by a 25 mm F4 lens secured in an S-mount bracket. A glass window with an integrated polarizing filter minimizes glare from reflective targets. Illumination is delivered by 16 LEDs arranged in four addressable segments behind an LED lens type 3 that forms a narrow beam. The internal imager streams at 90 fps, and preprocessing is handled at 800 MHz by the onboard clock, allowing one active vision function to run without dropped frames. It is supplied as the standard preprocessing variant. Separate LED segments allow the light pattern to be adjusted for the target surface, which helps the sensor handle reflective or uneven parts more consistently. The housing accepts only LED lens type 3; UV emitters, type 1 lenses, and line-sensor modes are not supported.

Image analysis is carried out by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual-core processor with 512 kB of L2 cache and 1 GB of RAM, giving adequate buffer space for the native 1.3 MP sensor output. The two cores execute the standard variant vision library and manage selectable illumination in R / B / IR / White, enabling adjustment to part color or ambient light. Cache and memory resources allow image data and processing steps to be handled locally instead of relying on external computing hardware. The unit belongs to the Smart Sensor product group and is intended for integrated machine vision tasks. This arrangement supports single-task inspections where stable timing is more important than multi-application processing.
