The VSS112R21.04DP-000 is a smart vision sensor produced by B & R Automation within the VS Smart Sensors series. It combines image capture, illumination, and on-board processing to execute one active vision function directly in the field, removing the need for a separate industrial PC. By delivering integrated machine vision, the device assists automated equipment with part presence checks, orientation verification, and simple dimensional inspections.

Computation is handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual core processor that runs at 800 MHz. The processor uses a shared 512 kB L2 cache, allowing faster access to frequently used data and lowering memory latency. The sensor carries 1 GB of RAM so it can buffer full image frames and intermediate analysis results without stalling the pipeline. Captured images stream through the imager at 90 fps, a rate that suits high-speed pick-and-place stations where multiple parts pass the field of view every second. The sensor uses standard preprocessing performance, so it can execute its selected vision tool set without additional accelerator hardware while still meeting typical factory cycle-time requirements.

The optical system sets the sensor's application limits. The 1/1.8-inch lens module provides a fixed 8 mm focal length with an aperture of F4 and mounts through an S-mount thread. A viewing angle of 37° pairs with the sensor's 1.3 MP resolution to balance coverage and detail for small to mid-sized parts. Illumination is delivered by 16 LEDs arranged in four multicolored segments; the LED lens type 2 and a plastic diffuser front glass spread light evenly while supporting red, blue, infrared, or white output. Infrared emitters are excluded when type 1 lenses are fitted, and the sensor is not intended for line-scan applications.
