The VSS112R21.031P-000 smart sensor is produced by B&R Automation as part of the VS Smart Sensors series. It integrates optics, lighting, processing, and I/O in one IP-rated aluminum housing capped with glass that has an anti-reflective coating, allowing machine builders to add entry-level vision inspection without a separate PC or camera. Within an automated cell, the unit detects presence, orientation, and simple quality features, then forwards pass or fail results directly to the controller through a standard fieldbus connection.

Inside the housing, a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual core processor runs at 800 MHz and is supported by 1 GB of DDR3 RAM and 512 kB of L2 cache to execute preprocessing for the single vision tool. This computing block maintains deterministic timing for image acquisition at a sensor rate of 90 fps, so moving parts on moderately fast assembly lines appear sharp. The 1/1.8-inch imager outputs 1.3 MP monochrome or color frames that match part sizes typically found in packaging and light mechanical handling. Because the hardware supports one active vision function and two execution cores, the standard preprocessing pipeline maintains stable operation even when background PLC communication is present.

Its optical path is tuned for short working distances. A 6 mm S-mount lens with an F3.5 aperture projects a 37° field of view onto the sensor, covering small trays or a section of a conveyor without excessive perspective error. Integrated illumination consists of 16 LEDs arranged in four segments, and each segment can emit R / B / IR / White light so the application can choose the contrast wavelength that best isolates marks, edges, or defects. The S-mount mechanics simplify lens changes, while the LED lens type 2 design helps contain stray light.
