B & R Automation builds the VSS112Q31.062P-000 smart sensor as part of its VS Smart Sensors series. The unit belongs to the integrated machine vision product range and provides one active vision function for inspection or guidance tasks inside automated machinery. As a self-contained device, it combines optics, illumination, and processing so that a controller does not need an external vision card. Its compact housing accepts an S-mount lens, and the product is intended for mounting close to the target, simplifying cabling in distributed machine architectures.

Its Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual-core processor operates at 800 MHz and is supported by 1 GB of RAM. With a native sensor resolution of 1.3 MP and an acquisition speed of 90 fps, the device records detailed frames even when parts move quickly on a conveyor. The two CPU pipelines, or 2 cores, execute preprocessing in the standard variant so that feature extraction is completed before data leaves the camera. The front glass has a polarizing filter to reduce glare. Internal illumination uses 16 multicolored LEDs arranged in four segments, and the narrow-beam LED lens type 3 directs R, G, B, and lime light onto the field of view. The sensor is not compatible with UV emitters or a type-1 LED lens, and line-scan operation is not available.

Optical alignment is fixed at 23° relative to the housing reference, which lets the imager view offset targets without extra brackets. A 16 mm focal setting, delivered through the supplied 16 mm, F4, 2/3" lens, supports moderate working distances while maintaining depth of field. As a Smart Sensor, the unit completes its vision algorithm internally, forwarding only evaluation results to the PLC and conserving network bandwidth. This configuration leaves motion control cycles unaffected by vision processing overhead.
