The VSS112Q31.061P-000 belongs to the VS Smart Sensors series from B&R Automation. It is a self-contained smart sensor for integrated machine vision tasks, capturing images, evaluating features, and sending pass/fail data directly to the control system without requiring an external PC. By combining optics, lighting, and onboard processing in one housing, the device supports conveyor, robotic, and pick-and-place applications that need fast inline inspection. Because image evaluation takes place inside the unit, it can be used for quality checks, presence verification, and feature detection without adding a separate vision computer.

A Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual-core processor runs at 800 MHz, and its 2 execution units allow image capture and analysis to run in parallel. An L2 cache of 512 kB helps reduce latency between the processor and the 1 GB of DDR3 RAM used for frame buffering and vision results. The standard preprocessing variant applies filter kernels to each exposure so the sensor can sustain 90 fps at a native resolution of 1.3 MP. One active vision function can be configured, which suits applications that need a single inspection routine instead of a multi-tool sequence. The unit does not support line sensor operation, so it is intended for area imaging.

The integrated S-mount optics use a focal length of 16 mm and a field angle of 23°, which supports inspection of parts positioned close to the housing. Illumination is provided by 16 LEDs arranged in four multicolored segments, and each diode can emit red, green, blue, or lime light through a narrow-beam lens element. The glass window has an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare on polished surfaces and help maintain image contrast. The segmented lighting arrangement helps the sensor adapt to parts with different colors and finishes. The unit is supplied in the standard variant for preprocessing and I/O behavior.
