The VSS112Q22.M52P-000 smart sensor is produced by B&R Automation as part of the VS Smart Sensors series. The device combines an image sensor, optics, illumination, and edge processing in a single enclosure, allowing it to execute one configured vision function such as code reading or part presence verification directly on the machine. In automated production lines, the unit provides integrated machine vision feedback to PLCs or motion controllers without external PCs, which helps reduce cabinet space and wiring.

Image acquisition is handled by a 1/1.8-inch CMOS array that delivers 1.3 MP resolution at up to 165 fps, supporting fast part tracking on high-speed conveyors. Processing is performed locally by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual core CPU clocked at 800 MHz; its two cores, assisted by 512 kB of L2 cache, run the standard preprocessing variant that filters, thresholds, and prepares frames before the user algorithm runs. The system also includes 1 GB of DDR3 RAM, so larger frame buffers or temporary analysis results do not stall the vision task. One active vision function runs at a time, and the smart sensor is suitable for line-sensor-based inspections when continuous web imaging is required.

Optical alignment is made easier by a 37° field of view created by the factory-mounted 12 mm, F4 1/1.8″ macro lens on the S-mount interface; the same focal length keeps small parts sharp at close working distances. A glass window with a polarizing filter blocks glare, while LED lens type 2 focuses the built-in lighting. The ring light comprises 16 LEDs (4 segments with 4 multicolored LEDs each) that can emit R / G / B / Lime channels individually or in combination to match surface characteristics. The unit uses the standard option designation and cannot be combined with UV emitters or type 1 LED optics.
