B&R Automation manufactures the VSS112Q22.04DP-000, an imaging node in the VS Smart Sensors series. Classified in the Integrated Machine Vision product range, the unit combines the sensor, optics, lighting, and processing in a self-contained smart sensor for industrial automation. By running a single active vision function entirely on board, it removes the need for an external PC and reduces network traffic in inspection, identification, or positioning applications. That arrangement keeps image capture and evaluation in one housing, which is useful where cabinet space is limited and a separate computing platform is unnecessary.

Processing is handled by a Cortex-A9 i.MX6 dual-core CPU clocked at 800 MHz, and the two cores share a 512 kB L2 cache to accelerate repetitive vision algorithms. The board provides 1 GB of RAM so larger frame buffers can be retained while preprocessing runs in the standard variant performance class. Local memory also helps the unit buffer images and intermediate data without relying on external hardware. At maximum sensor load, the imager streams data at 165 fps, allowing rapid inspection sequences at its native 1.3 MP resolution. The electronics are designated as a standard variant, and the unit must not be paired with IR lighting or a type 1 LED lens. Line-sensor suitability means both area and linear modes are supported, widening the scope of measurement tasks.

The optical subassembly uses an S-mount and ships with an F4 lens specified at a focal length of 8 mm for fields that match a mechanical angle of 37°. A plastic diffuser is installed as front glass to soften glare, and LED lens type 2 governs beam geometry in the standard version. Illumination is generated by 16 LEDs arranged in four segments, and each segment can emit R / G / B / Lime to adapt contrast without external light bars. Segmented lighting can help the sensor emphasize edges, marks, or surface differences on inspected parts. These colors are controlled automatically by the embedded processor, and because the mount, lens, and lighting ship in a single enclosure, installation requires only a 24 V supply and network cable.
