B & R Automation produces the VSS112Q22.043P-000, a vision-capable device in the VS Smart Sensors series that belongs to the Integrated Machine Vision product range and Smart Sensor product group. The unit combines optics, processor, memory, and multicolored illumination in one S-mount package so it can execute an inspection, identification, or guidance routine directly on the production line without an external controller. It supports one active vision function at a time, making it a compact option for stations that need discrete, self-contained quality checks.

Image capture and preprocessing are handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual-core processor operating at 800 MHz; the two cores share a 512 kB L2 cache and access 1 GB of DDR-based RAM, giving the sensor enough bandwidth for filtering, thresholding, and geometric calculations. The standard variant designation covers both the preprocessing performance rating and the hardware option set, ensuring consistent behavior across installations. Raw frames are recorded at a native 1.3 MP resolution, supplying sufficient pixel density for feature extraction over the sensor’s full 37° optical cone. A glass diffuser on the front window equalizes light distribution from the internal LED array while protecting the optics from airborne debris.

During operation, the camera streams at 165 fps, allowing motion-tolerant inspection of fast conveyors or web processes. An S-mount lens with a focal length of 8 mm and F4 aperture fits the 1/1.8-inch imager and can be exchanged to match the working distance. Illumination comes from 16 LEDs arranged as four segments, and each segment can emit red, green, blue, or lime-colored light through an LED lens type 2 optic for adaptable contrast. The 37° optical angle supports both area and line-scan modes, and the sensor is suitable for line-sensor applications where continuous web inspection is required.
