The VSS112Q22.042P-000 smart camera is manufactured by B & R Automation and belongs to the VS Smart Sensors series. As a compact vision device, it integrates image capture, preprocessing, and illumination to perform one active vision function directly on the machine. This configuration removes the need for a separate industrial PC while keeping the device within the supplier’s integrated machine vision range.

The unit runs on an 800 MHz processor clock and uses a dual-core Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual core system-on-chip. A dedicated 1 GB of DDR3 SDRAM buffers images and intermediate data during inspection tasks. With a sensor resolution of 1.3 MP, the camera can deliver detailed frames at a sustained rate of 165 fps, which supports high-speed part tracking on fast conveyors. Two symmetric cores handle preprocessing so the main processor can run the integrated algorithm without external assistance. Standard preprocessing performance and support for line-sensor applications allow the device to handle both area and line capture modes. Internal flash stores operating data, and the product is not intended for use with UV LEDs or with a type 1 LED lens, which keeps the optical setup compatible with its S-mount interface.

An S-mount lens with a focal length of 8 mm and an F4 aperture sets the image scale, while a diagonal optical angle of 37° determines the field of view for typical part distances on packaging machinery. The processor’s shared L2 cache is 512 kB, which reduces external memory traffic when convolution filters are running. Illumination is supplied by 16 LEDs (4 segments with 4 multicolored LEDs each), and each segment can emit red, green, blue, or lime-colored light so the application can select a wavelength without changing hardware. A glass front window with an integral polarizing filter reduces glare from reflective workpieces, and LED lens type 2 maintains a consistent beam profile across the sensor.
