The VSS112Q21.M5BP-000 smart vision sensor is manufactured by B&R Automation for the VS Smart Sensors series. It combines imaging, illumination, and onboard processing to execute a single active vision function directly on the factory floor, eliminating the need for an external PC. As part of the Integrated Machine Vision product range, the unit supports compact installations where space is limited and fast response is important in industrial automation. This integrated approach reduces external hardware and helps the sensor fit machines that have limited cabinet or frame space.

Its processing subsystem is driven by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual core CPU clocked at 800 MHz, and the two cores share 1 GB of DDR3 RAM with a 512 kB L2 cache for inline image analysis. The sensor captures 1.3-megapixel frames at up to 90 fps, allowing short exposure times during high-speed inspection. A native resolution of 1.3 MP works with the 1/1.8-inch imager to support detailed evaluation of marks, edges, and small parts. Because line-sensor operation is not supported, all acquisition relies on the area array. Local processing keeps image evaluation inside the sensor housing and supports consistent response during automated inspection tasks where fast pass-or-fail decisions are needed.

The optical front end uses an S-mount housing fitted with a 12 mm F4 macro lens that presents a fixed field angle of 37°. A transparent plastic window with anti-reflective coating shields the optics from routine contamination while helping maintain a clear light path to the imager. Illumination is integrated as a ring of 16 LEDs arranged in four multicolored segments, and each segment can emit red, green, blue, or lime light through an LED lens type 2 assembly. The package must not be combined with IR emitters or type 1 lenses, as indicated by the restriction note. Mechanical alignment is simplified by the dedicated S-mount, and no additional line-sensor fixtures are required for standard area-image operation.
