The VSS112Q21.M52P-000 smart sensor is manufactured by B&R Automation and belongs to the VS Smart Sensors series. Classified in the integrated machine vision product range, it combines optics, lighting, and an embedded processor so one active vision function can run directly inside the housing. By handling inspection, identification, or simple guidance tasks at the point of capture, the device removes the need for a separate industrial PC, reducing wiring and cabinet space. An S-mount thread lets the unit be fixed near tooling or conveyors, while a standard fieldbus link connects it to the machine controller for parameter download and result exchange.

Image processing is executed by a dual-core Cortex A9 running at 800 MHz; this clock rate, together with 1 GB of RAM and a 512 kB L2 cache, supports filtering, thresholding, and pattern location in real time. The onboard sensor delivers a native resolution of 1.3 MP, which is enough for detailed inspection over moderate fields of view, and streams these frames at up to 90 fps. Two execution threads operate concurrently on the processor thanks to its 2 cores, so acquisition, preprocessing, and communications proceed without stalling the vision algorithm. The standard preprocessing variant balances speed with thermal load and helps maintain deterministic cycle times in continuous production.

A factory-set optical path provides a 37° horizontal angle that matches the included 16 LEDs arranged in four multicolored segments. Red, green, blue, and lime emitters work with LED lens type 2 to illuminate most material finishes, while the front window is glass with a polarizing filter to cut glare from reflective parts. Close-range applications benefit from the 12 mm macro lens; its F4 aperture and 1/1.8-inch image circle maintain focus only a few centimeters from the target. The assembly is not equipped with UV LEDs or a type 1 LED lens, and it does not include a line-sensor option.
