B & R Automation manufactures the VSS112Q11.041P-000 vision node in its VS Smart Sensors series. Classified within the Smart Sensor product group and the integrated machine vision range, the device unites optics, lighting, and compute resources inside a compact S-mount enclosure so machine builders can embed inline inspection or positioning without external PCs. It executes one active vision function directly on the sensor, delivering pass/fail or coordinate data to the controller in real time.

The imaging section uses a 1.3 MP global-shutter sensor coupled to a lens with 8 mm focal length, F4 aperture, and 1/1.8″ format to deliver a horizontal field of 74°. At up to 90 fps, the camera can track fast-moving parts while still maintaining positional accuracy. Illumination is generated by internal RGB-Lime emitters that sit behind LED lens type 1 with a wide beam profile, ensuring even coverage across the field of view. All preprocessing for the standard variant is handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual-core SoC running at 800 MHz, so the host PLC receives pre-filtered edges or blob statistics instead of raw images. The sensor is not intended for line-scan applications, making it suited to area inspection tasks.

The processor supports the sensor's real-time operations. The dual processor includes 1 GB of DDR3 RAM for image buffers and 512 kB of shared L2 cache that accelerates feature calculations before results are forwarded on Gigabit Ethernet. Its processing cluster totals 2 cores, allowing one core to handle vision tasks while the other maintains network traffic. The lighting array contains 16 LEDs divided into four segments, and the glass window carries an anti-reflective coating to preserve contrast on reflective packaging. Lenses can be swapped without recalibration, which helps keep optical changes simple within the existing architecture.
