The VSS112F21.M51P-000 smart camera is produced by B&R Automation for the VS Smart Sensors series. As part of the Smart Sensor product group and the integrated machine vision range, it combines optics, lighting, and dual-core processing in one enclosure. In industrial automation lines, the unit captures images, evaluates features, and forwards inspection results directly to PLC or robot controllers, eliminating the need for a separate vision computer. This integrated approach supports compact inspection stations where decisions must be made close to the process.

Onboard computation relies on a Cortex A9 i.MX6 processor clocked at 800 MHz. Its 2 cores share a 512 kB L2 cache, and vision algorithms run in 1 GB of RAM. This standard preprocessing variant is tuned for moderate workloads and supports one active vision function at a time. The sensor observes the scene through a 37° field of view that balances coverage with pixel density. Because preprocessing occurs inside the camera, results reach the control layer with minimal latency and reduced network traffic.

A 90 fps acquisition rate pairs with 1.3 MP resolution to capture sharp images of fast-moving parts. Illumination is delivered by 16 LEDs arranged in four segments of four, and the array uses LED lens type 2 optics for uniform white light across the visible spectrum. Light exits through front glass with an anti-reflective coating, which improves signal-to-noise and helps limit glare from reflective surfaces. The integrated 12 mm, F4 1/1.8″ macro lens provides a fixed focal length, and the S-mount allows lens replacement when a different viewing angle is needed. Because the sensor is not intended for line-scan operation, it is suited to area-based inspections that require fast cycles and localized decisions on the machine.
