B & R Automation produces the VSS112F21.04BP-000 smart camera as part of the VS Smart Sensors series. Classified in the Smart Sensor product group and positioned within the integrated machine vision range, this self-contained unit combines optics, lighting, and processing in a single housing. It is intended to execute one active vision function on the machine, offloading PLC resources and simplifying installation. The integrated design also reduces the need for separate lighting and external image-processing hardware. Because the device uses an S-mount interface, lenses can be exchanged without special adapters, which helps simplify retrofit work in industrial automation cells.

At the core of the sensor is a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual-core processor. Its two processing threads run at 800 MHz and share a 512 kB L2 cache, providing deterministic image preprocessing in the standard performance variant for this model. With 1 GB of onboard DDR3 RAM, acquired frames are buffered before final evaluation. Local buffering helps maintain stable image handling when trigger timing and evaluation must remain consistent from cycle to cycle. The imager delivers 1.3 MP of spatial resolution at a capture rate of 90 fps, enabling inspection of rapidly moving parts on packaging or assembly lines. This version is not suitable for line-sensor applications, so it should be used for area-based inspection tasks only.

The optical front end supports a scene angle of 37°, delivered by an 8 mm focal-length lens (F4, 1/1.8″) mounted behind plastic front glass with an anti-reflective coating. Illumination is integrated through 16 LEDs arranged in four individually switchable segments; the LEDs are white, driven through LED lens type 2, and cover the full visible spectrum, so no additional light source is required. Segment control can help highlight edges or surface contrast from different directions when the inspection task changes. The enclosure carries an IP65/IP67 sealing grade, permitting washdown mounting close to the process, although the design is limited to configurations without IR emitters or type 1 LED lenses.
