The VSS112F21.042P-000 smart sensor is developed by B&R Automation as part of the VS Smart Sensors series. Classified in the Smart Sensor product group within the integrated machine vision range, it combines optics, illumination, and processing in one enclosure. The unit mounts on an S-mount and is intended for machine builders who need onboard inspection, identification, or guidance without separate controllers. By performing image capture and evaluation directly at the point of use, the device reduces cabling and frees PLC resources for other control tasks. This integrated design is useful where mounting space is limited and where response time benefits from keeping image processing close to the process.
Internal computation is handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual-core processor clocked at 800 MHz. It uses a 512 kB L2 cache to support local image handling before results are passed to the control system. Imaging data enters 1 GB of DDR3 memory, allowing real-time buffering at up to 90 fps during fast inspection cycles. The optical path relies on an 8 mm, F4 lens matched to a 1/1.8-inch format, while a glass front window with a polarizing filter helps suppress glare. White lighting is provided by 16 LEDs arranged in four segments, and each segment uses lens type 2 to spread illumination more evenly across the target area.
The optics provide a diagonal angle of view of 37°, and the imager offers a native resolution of 1.3 MP for detailed inspection of medium-sized parts. Illumination covers the entire visible spectrum, which supports color-based checks without requiring external lamps in typical applications. The device is intended only for area imaging, so it is not designed for line-scan tasks or moving-web measurements. It must be used without UV LEDs or a type 1 LED lens, which states the accessory limitation in a clear and readable form. This operating limit should be observed when selecting compatible lighting components and optical accessories.
