The VSS112821.04BP-000 is a compact smart camera produced by B&R Automation as part of the VS Smart Sensors series. Classified in the integrated machine vision range, the unit combines optics, illumination, processing, and I/O in one housing so it can perform inline inspection or presence detection without an external PC. It is intended for direct installation in an automation cell where space and cabling must be minimized. By placing image capture and evaluation inside the same device, it reduces the need for separate vision hardware and shortens the signal path between sensing and control.

Its optics provide a viewing angle of 37° through an 8 mm F4 lens fitted to an S-mount interface. The 1/1.8-inch sensor outputs a native resolution of 1.3 MP and captures images at up to 90 fps, allowing the unit to follow high-speed production lines. Image frames are buffered in 1 GB of DDR RAM and processed locally by a dual-core architecture running at 800 MHz. A 512 kB L2 cache supports rapid data exchange between the cores. Local memory buffering helps the camera maintain steady analysis during repeated image acquisition. The system supports one active vision function at a time, which helps maintain predictable cycle times.

The illumination module contains 16 LEDs arranged in four individually addressable segments that emit red light at 632 nm through LED lens type 2. Separate segment control allows the light pattern to be adjusted for different inspection tasks and target surfaces. The front window is plastic with an anti-reflective coating, and the sensor cannot be combined with IR LEDs or type 1 LED lenses. A fixed focal length of 8 mm simplifies setup because depth of field remains constant once the S-mount is locked. The onboard Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual core processor executes vision algorithms while maintaining standard variant performance. Line-sensor operation is not supported.
