The VSS112811.041P-000 is a vision-based smart sensor developed by B & R Automation for the VS Smart Sensors series. It combines image capture, embedded processing, and lighting in one enclosure. This allows production lines to perform presence checks, dimensional verification, or code reading without an external PC.

The sensor’s dual-core processor runs at 800 MHz; paired with 1 GB of DDR3 memory, it executes one active vision function and keeps intermediate image buffers in RAM without stalling the inspection cycle. The system also uses a 512 kB L2 cache that feeds the cores. The processor is a Cortex A9 i.MX6, so ARM-based toolchains can be used for custom tasks. Image data are acquired through a 1/1.8-inch lens with a focal length of 8 mm, giving a 74° horizontal field that matches confined conveyor widths. The 1/3-inch CMOS sensor yields a native resolution of 1.3 MP, and its rolling shutter can deliver up to 90 fps, allowing the device to track fast-moving parts without motion blur. Frame preprocessing is handled by the standard-variant pipeline, ensuring deterministic response times even when barcode decoding, blob analysis, or edge detection are enabled.

Illumination is produced by a ring of 16 LEDs divided into four quadrants, and type-1 wide-beam optics spread the red light evenly across the target. The diodes emit at a peak wavelength of 632 nm, which helps minimize glare on metal surfaces behind the anti-reflective front glass pane. A viewing angle of 74° pairs with the S-mount thread so alternate optics can be installed without exceeding the sensor’s envelope. No line-scan mode is offered, but two CPU cores, the standard-variant preprocessing profile, and the integrated LED controller maintain cycle times when high-contrast snapshots are required.
