The VSS112321.071P-000 smart sensor is produced by B & R Automation within the VS Smart Sensors series. Classified in the Smart Sensor product group and the Integrated machine vision range, it combines imaging, lighting, and onboard processing to perform a single active vision function directly on the machine. By concentrating these functions in one housing, the unit supports compact installation near conveyors, fixtures, and part-handling stations. This removes the need for a separate industrial PC in inspection or part-tracking applications.

Computation is handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual-core processor. Its 800 MHz base clock and 2 physical cores are supported by a 512 kB L2 cache that buffers repetitive data access. The cache helps repeated evaluation steps run more consistently when the same inspection routine is executed across successive frames. The unit carries 1 GB of DDR3 RAM, allowing image buffers and preprocessing algorithms to remain resident without paging. Because this is the standard variant, preprocessing performance follows the default series profile. Image acquisition proceeds at 90 fps, letting the sensor measure fast-moving objects while maintaining a native output resolution of 1.3 MP per frame. The device supports one active vision function, which reserves bandwidth for deterministic Ethernet or fieldbus communication.

The optical path is set for a field of view of 37° and uses an S-mount that accepts interchangeable lenses. The factory-installed optics use a 25 mm focal length with an F4 2/3-inch lens, giving moderate magnification for part sizes common on assembly conveyors. Illumination is provided by blue light generated by an array of 16 LEDs arranged in four equal segments, and LED lens type 2 helps improve edge contrast. A peak wavelength of 468 nm aligns with common fluorescent rejection filters, while anti-reflective front glass reduces ghost images under angled glare. The sensor does not support line-sensor operation, so only area mode is available. The sensor uses the standard mechanical housing and does not include extra cooling provisions.
