The VSS112004.03BP-000 is a smart vision sensor produced by B & R Automation in the VS Smart Sensors series. It combines image acquisition and onboard processing so it can perform inspection or guidance tasks directly inside an automation cell. Instead of sending raw image streams to an external computer, the unit provides evaluated results to the control system, which helps reduce network traffic and simplify system integration. Local evaluation also shortens the path between detection and machine response, which is useful where timing is tight and cabinet space is limited.

Processing is handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 processor clocked at 800 MHz with 2 cores. An on-chip 512 kB L2 cache works with external 1 GB DDR3 RAM to support image buffering and evaluation. This model uses the standard preprocessing configuration and standard ordering option, with no additional acceleration blocks. Only one vision function can run at a time, which helps keep response times predictable. The sensor is supplied without LED lighting and without an LED lens, so external illumination is required. Line-scan operation is not available, and the plastic front glass has an anti-reflective coating to reduce surface glare.

On the imaging side, the sensor captures frames at a native resolution of 3.5 MP, allowing fine features to be evaluated without relying on sub-pixel interpolation. The imaging pipeline supports up to 43 fps, which is suitable for monitoring moderately paced conveyor movement and other repeatable machine cycles. A factory-supplied 6 mm F3.5 1/1.8" lens establishes the field of view, and it mounts in an S-mount holder for straightforward replacement. That arrangement allows the optical setup to be adapted for different working distances without changing the sensor body. The fixed focal length offers a balanced depth of field for parts positioned a short distance from the camera window. Because the sensor does not include internal LED illumination, external strobes can be selected to match the surface finish, contrast, and reflectivity of the inspected object.
