B&R Automation's VSS112004.031P-000 is a self-contained smart camera in the VS Smart Sensors series. It belongs to the Smart Sensor product group and the Integrated machine vision range. The device records images and processes them on board for presence checks, code reading, and dimensional verification on production lines where a compact vision node reduces wiring and removes the need for a separate industrial PC. Because image capture and processing are combined in one housing, the camera can be mounted close to the inspection point and return results directly to the control system.

The unit uses a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual core processor running at 800 MHz. It has 2 cores that share a 512 kB L2 cache and work with 1 GB of DDR3 RAM to handle filtering, segmentation, and classification without external assistance. An area sensor with 3.5 MP native resolution streams images at up to 43 fps, preserving detail while supporting short cycle times. The camera uses a fixed 6 mm focal length, and its 6 mm F3.5 1/1.8-inch lens is secured by an S-mount. The hardware is supplied as a standard preprocessing variant, so edge, blob, and threshold operations can be completed before results are sent to the controller.

This camera is supplied as the standard variant and supports one active vision function at run time, which helps keep control integration straightforward. Imaging surfaces are protected by front glass with anti-reflective coating, which helps reduce glare from factory lighting. Onboard illumination is omitted because the unit has no LED lighting, and the housing is built without an LED lens, so external strobes are required when the scene needs controlled brightness. The design supports only area imaging, which means line-sensor operation is not available.
