The VSS112001.04BP-000 is a smart sensor from B & R Automation in the VS Smart Sensors series. As part of the integrated machine vision product range, it combines a camera module with onboard computing so the controller receives evaluated inspection results instead of raw image data. In typical assembly or packaging lines, the unit runs one active vision function to verify part presence, orientation, or dimensions without the delay of a remote PC, and its compact housing allows direct mounting on crowded machines.

Its processing section is built around a Cortex A9 i.MX6 dual core processor running at 800 MHz. The architecture provides 2 cores that share a 512 kB L2 cache, giving the sensor fast access to intermediate image data during image evaluation. Working memory totals 1 GB, which is enough to hold multiple frames while algorithms operate in parallel. The device is delivered as the standard variant, and its preprocessing performance is also standard, so no additional accelerator is required. A capture rate of 90 fps lets the sensor keep pace with high-speed conveyors, and the single active vision function can return pass/fail information to the control system in real time.

The optical path uses a focal length of 8 mm and an 8 mm F4 1/1.8″ lens secured by the S-mount. Paired with a resolution of 1.3 MP, this setup balances field of view and image detail for mid-range inspection tasks. The front window is plastic and has an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare from plant lighting. The housing is supplied without LED lighting and without an LED lens, so external illumination is required. IR emitters and type 1 LED lenses cannot be used with this configuration. The unit is not suitable for line-sensor applications, which confirms that it is intended for area capture in discrete-part handling.
