B&R Automation manufactures the VSC122R21.06BP-000 in its VS Smart Sensors series. Classified as a smart camera within the Integrated Machine Vision product range, the unit combines image capture, onboard processing, and lighting in a single S-mount housing so a PLC receives evaluated results instead of raw frames for inspection tasks. In machine building and quality inspection lines, this reduces cabling, frees the control CPU, and simplifies retrofits where only Ethernet and power are available.

The camera’s computational core is a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad core running at a 800 MHz clock frequency with 1 MB of L2 cache, so preprocessing tasks are handled locally rather than in the controller. The standard variant uses the four cores and the available 2 GB of RAM to manage several vision functions at the same time, including image filtering and feature extraction. Sensor output is delivered at a 1.3 MP resolution and can be streamed or triggered at up to 90 fps, allowing real-time monitoring of fast indexing mechanisms and similar moving equipment. Because the unit is not intended for line-sensor applications, it uses area-based acquisition for each exposure.

Optical components include a 16 mm, F4 2/3" lens that yields a horizontal field of view of 37°. The optics are protected by plastic front glass with an anti-reflective coating and work with LED lens type 2, which focuses the multicolored illumination generated by 16 LEDs (4 segments with 4 multicolored LEDs each). Those LEDs emit selectable R / B / IR / White light. The restriction note states that this module is not paired with a type 1 lens. Mounting uses the compact S-mount thread for easy lens changes, and the camera can deliver several vision functions simultaneously without external lighting or separate control boxes.
